Local Knowledge About Pressure Assist Toilets

Most manufacturers now only produce toilets that use 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or less. Most older toilets use from about 3.5 to 5.5 gpf and some as high as 7.0 gpf. Although most of these new 1.6-gpf toilets use a similar gravity flush design, their flush effectiveness varies significantly among the various models. You cannot judge it by the tank style or height. Some of the new low-tank one-piece models provide an excellent flush. Pressure-assisted toilets generally flush better than standard 1.6-gpf gravity toilets. There is a small horizontal cylinder inside the toilet tank. This holds air that gets compressed by the water main pressure as the tank fills. This compressed air gives a more forceful flush.
